Who is TBF?
TBF is a charity which exists only to help public transport workers and their families. It is not a commercial body. For just £1a week we can offer a range of benefits.
Who runs the organization?
TBF is run by Trustees, who must be public transport workers to hold office. They understand the industry and the needs of staff.
Do you have support throughout the industry?
We enjoy the support of all the major employers in the industry and also the leaders of the main transport trade unions.
Do you pay your representatives commission?
No.
Will my contributions increase?
We increased the rate to £1 in 1994 and haven't put it up since. And we have no intention of doing, though of course we can't promise this for ever.
We aren't married. Is my partner still covered?
Yes, of course. We recognize almost any partnership - married or living together, opposite or same sex.
What If I need to convalesce?
We don't just believe we are streets ahead here - we know we are. If you cannot convalesce or recuperate without a carer we'll pay for them too. If you have to take the children we'll pay for them. Even if you don't have to take anyone but would like to, we can almost certainly arrange this. And you certainly don't have to have been in hospital to qualify.
What is the limit on claims each year?
You'll be amazed to learn that, unlike so many others, we don't have one. We look at each request and within our financial resources we give as much help as we can assist our members. We have limits on the help we can give with some treatments but, if your job is at risk because you need more treatment, we can usually give extra help . And we treat each family member independently - no 'totting up' for the family. Generally we are unable to help towards optical, dental or funeral costs or for operations. We are sorry we cannot give loans.
Do you exclude pre-existing conditions?
Many organisations do, but we don't, though we have to reserve the right to in very exceptional cases. The Trustees may ask that you contribute for twelve weeks before benefits are granted but this period is normally waived.
What if I want to talk to the Director or to appeal against a decision?
Unlike many organizations, the TBF Director will speak to members and - if he thinks a strict application of the Rules would be unhelpful - he asks the Trustees to vary them. How many other bodies will do that?
This is a shift job - how can I get hold of someone out of hours?
A lot of organizations go to bed at 1700. So do we, but we have a help line available for absolute emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
What happens if I move jobs or leave the industry and still want to remain a member?
The Trustees will generally agree that your membership can continue if you complete a suitable mandate.
And what happens when I retire?
A copy of the Rules will be supplied on request, but if you have been paying for the necessary number of years, we will extend free membership to you and your partner in retirement. If you are retired on ill-health grounds we may be able to offer it earlier. Can you think of any other organization which offers this?
If you had to sum up what you're about, what would you say?
TBF has been helping members since 1923. We are always ready to help, whatever the problem - ask our members! Even if you have no immediate problems, your contributions will help others in need.
